IRIAN
Take a leap back in time to the stone-age
in Irian Jaya, Indonesia’s most primitive island. Irian Jaya is found
on the western portion of the island of New Guinea, a region of dramatic
landscape and unusual sights.
Hidden deep in
the highland valleys, the ancient cultures here were only accidentally

is the capital of the province and gateway to the valley.
The Baliem Valley
is home to the ferocious-looking, although friendly Dani tribesmen.
These men wear little more than some body paint, feathered headdresses
and the traditional “koteka” or penis gourd. And what are these tribeman’s
most valued possession? Pigs. Sweet potato, the staple of their diet,
is also an important commodity.
Other unique, isolated
tribes like the Yali or artistic Asmat are also worth getting to know.
Some tribes ( which you may not want to visit ) still practice cannibalism!
Relax, as these tribes live very far away in the inaccessible areas
of the province.
Irian Jaya is a land of coastal swamps,
Neolithic tribes, highland river valleys and glacial peaks. This distant
province is one of the world’s last frontiers and
